DRM helps learners become more robust against climate change

The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) facilitated a series of climate change programmes for learners over the last few days, aimed at creating awareness of the impact of climate change and amplifying some of the theoretical aspects of classroom lessons.
The programmes were multi-faceted, aiming to identify and understand the myriad hazards, risks and vulnerabilities faced by communities.
Learners spent a day in one of the City's nature reserves, learning more about climate change, its impact on weather patterns and the environment and what they can do to help mitigate the risks.
Learners participated in environmental games, but also tackled topics such as deforestation, pollution, invasive species, biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as hazards and risks emanating from climate change like raised sea levels, flooding, droughts and heat waves.
'It is important for young people to know how climate change is going to shape their futures. It will influence where they live, the kind of work they will do, and most importantly, their quality of life. Education about climate change gives them the ability to develop green skills, and understand how to combat climate change and how a warming world is changing.
'The programme encourages young people to help tackle the causes and consequences of climate change. By ensuring our children have the knowledge to address this crisis, we can prevent further calamity,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

- Jamaica Way Primary School, Mitchell's Plain
- Sophakama Primary School, Du Noon
- Christian Davids Moravian Primary School, Coniston Park
